IFRS 18 is not merely a new set of requirements. It is an opportunity for companies to make financial reporting clearer, more structured and more useful.
To prepare effectively, companies should focus on eight key areas:
- Clarify the purpose of subtotals
Understand what each subtotal is intended to communicate and ensure that it provides meaningful information to users.
- Establish clear profit layers
Review how financial performance is presented and organise the relevant profit measures in a consistent and understandable way.
- Standardise the reporting structure
Promote greater consistency in the presentation and classification of financial information across reporting periods and, where relevant, across the group.
- Highlight key performance information
Ensure that important performance information is clearly presented and not obscured by excessive or less relevant detail.
- Start preparing early
Early preparation gives the finance team more time to understand the requirements, identify gaps and address implementation issues.
- Assess the impact on systems and processes
Review the effects on the chart of accounts, reporting systems, data collection, management reports, consolidation processes and internal controls.
- Strengthen communication
Finance teams should communicate with management, the Board, auditors, IT teams and other relevant departments so that everyone understands the changes and their implications.
- Prepare an implementation plan
Set out the key actions, responsibilities, timelines, training requirements and review procedures needed to implement the changes effectively.
The earlier a company begins preparing, the smoother the transition is likely to be.
Turn complexity into clarity, and turn change into opportunity.
