Thinking about becoming a Chartered Accountant (Malaysia), or CA(M)?
The right qualification pathway depends on your current academic or professional qualifications. The Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) recognises several routes for individuals who wish to qualify as a CA(M).
Recognised Pathways
Depending on your background, you may qualify through one of the following routes:
- Passing a final examination from a recognised Malaysian university under Part I of the First Schedule, together with at least three years of relevant experience;
- Obtaining membership of a recognised professional accountancy body under Part II of the First Schedule; or
- Passing the MIA Qualifying Examination, together with three years of relevant experience.
The CARE Programme
For experience-based pathways, the CARE Programme helps candidates convert their practical work experience into documented professional competencies.
Candidates may be required to:
- Appoint an MIA mentor;
- Record their technical competencies; and
- Demonstrate generic competencies through work-based examples.
This process helps show how a candidate’s practical experience has contributed to the development of the competencies expected of a professional accountant.
Applying Through MIA
When ready to apply, applicants complete the process online through the MIA Member Services Portal.
Applicants should prepare the relevant certified documents, which may include:
- Identification documents;
- Degree and academic transcript documents;
- Evidence of professional membership; and
- CARE competency records, where applicable.
The application fee stated in the supplied guidelines is RM850.
After admission, newly admitted members must complete the e-MIC Member Induction Course within six months of admission.
Non-Malaysian applicants may also need to satisfy additional membership, residency or work-permit requirements.
Why MIA Registration Matters
In Malaysia, the use of the word “Accountant” is protected under the Accountants Act 1967.
MIA registration is therefore an important professional milestone for individuals who intend to hold themselves out or practise as an Accountant in Malaysia.
